Beyond, The Magazine
A new magazine, just for us, has hit the shelves. There is a magazine just for brides, one for fishermen, one for crafters, and now there is one just for breast cancer survivors. It is called "Beyond," and like all magazines it has a glossy beautiful cover. It is indeed a beautiful and well-done magazine. "Beyond" hit the newsstands and magazine shelves September 19. But to be honest, I have checked several places where I purchase magazines and have not seen it yet. It is worth looking for though.

Deciding On Radiation
I opted not to have radiation after mastectomy and chemotherapy. It was advised by my oncologist, surgeon and radiologist. I sought a second opinion from a radiologist at another hospital with the same results; even though I had had a mastectomy, because of lymph node involvement (I had 8 positive for cancer) radiation to the chest and underarm area was advised.

Revisiting Reconstruction
I was invited to speak at a Victorian tea this weekend. I had been asked to wear a period costume, which the organizers rented for me. I got to pick out a lovely Victorian dress from a local costume shop. I would not have been able to choose the dress I chose if I had not had reconstructive surgery. There were other dresses I could have chosen, but this one, a bright red off the shoulder and tightly laced in the back, looked terrific on me. I wore it with a black feather boa and long black gloves. It was a spectacular event, and I rose to the occasion.

Women Unite, Fight A Good Fight!
There can't be a more perfect weapon against women than breast cancer. Although men do get this disease, when it attacks women, it seems to strike at the very essence of womanhood. The treatment and cures unfortunately do the same thing. Think about it. Our breasts are the primary target, and the best defense is to remove all or part of them. Our hormones distinguish our bodies as female, and they become the enemy. The treatment strips us of these hormones and our bodies stop functioning as female. Chemotherapy further takes away female aspects, it stops our menses and even our hair, for some of us a crown of femininity, is stolen from us.

Cll Misunderstood
Greetings from Chicago, where I host a breast cancer education event this week. I just got back from Washington, D.C., where I testified before an FDA advisory hearing of the Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee. I am still reeling from what happened there and wanted to share it with you because it says a lot about where we are with drug development and cancer drug approvals.

Looking Behind The Fda Curtain
Thank you for all the comments to my blog postings about the FDA and its process for reviewing Genasense. It's still up to the FDA to approve it or not. It is an uphill battle as the advisory committee voted 7-3 against approval. The earlier blog posting and the very expert comments from so many CLL'ers will provide you with a all the background if you are new to the discussion.

Who Is The Fda Trying To Protect?
I'll be the first to say the folks at the FDA have a hard job. It is their responsibility to protect the public safety and certainly not subject those of us who are ill to drugs that offer false hope or tremendous risk. And when it comes to considering new drugs for approval, I know how much they want to get it right the first time. The last thing they need is to have to pull a drug off the market after people have been hurt causing damage to the FDA's credibility to Congress.
