Jap Pharmaceutical Firm Invests $44-million in India

Slowly but steadily, the Japanese like the rest of the world or pouring in investments in India, as the country’s economic miracle continues to perform more and more miracles.  It is now the turn of Eisai Pharmaceuticals, a ¥ 1-billion Japanese pharmaceuticals group, to come up with mega plans to open a production and research unit in India next year.

According to reports from Tokyo, the Japanese firm is expected to invest over ¥ 5-billion ($44 -million) for the proposed facility, and the setting up of Eisai’s manufacturing and research facilities in India is aiming at tripling its Asian sales to ¥ 60-billion ($522.9-million) by 2011, a Nikkei report states.  The Japanese pharmaceutical firm’s proposed Indian site will produce, research and develop new drugs, as well, work on data management for global analyses and processes clinical trial data, to confirm the effectiveness and safety of drug candidates, the report stated.

Eisai’s Indian project according to the Nikkei report will supply products not only to Asia, but also to the Middle East and African markets, capitalising on the technological prowess of Indian researchers, including low production costs.  By setting up the manufacturing and R&D site in India, Eisai will also become the first Japanese drug maker in India to have a structure integrating development, production and sales.

An industry analyst tracking multinational drug companies in India says, apart from setting a green field facility and research location, the Eisai group is also scouting around for acquiring US FDA approved drug manufacturing facilities in India.  “The Japanese drug maker has identified the country as a potential sourcing base for its global market requirement and the feasibility studies are currently going on,” he added.

With a corporate and marketing office, which opened in Mumbai last year, Eisai Pharmaceuticals India has yet to identify the location for the R&D centre and manufacturing facility in India.

Investments pour in as India’s impressive performance clinches the fact; the sub-continent is a far better bet and a more stable partner than communist China.  Then too, the combined power of Indian brains, dedicated hard work and effective low cost high quality has played an important part in awing the world.  The question remains, why now and not before?  It’s not like the Indians ever lacked brains, or were afraid to knuckle down and work hard.  One just has to take a look at the success stories of Indian immigrants the world over and, truly that tells you something of the really hard work put in, in the face of intense discrimination, racism and the proverbial glass ceiling.  Despite, everything Indians have risen to the top and UK has far more Indian firms and millionaires / billionaires than the native Brits!

According to my analysis, It is now, because after partition, India was ruled by Macaulay’s children, who passed on the inferiority complex, deliberately instilled in the local populace by the British, along with their admiration for all things western and the conviction ‘East or West, West is Best’ to the next couple of generations.  But, as new research substantiated with archaeological evidence reveals the duplicity of the British in making civilisers of the world believe their culture was inferior, and that they were better off trying to pass themselves off as brown Englishmen, the new generation of Indians has rediscovered their roots and a new found confidence in their past.  Today, ‘Proud to be Indian’ rules the day!

Indians, no longer think western music, western flicks, western culture, western art or firangs are the next best thing.  They are beginning to revel in their own music, albeit with a new take, tinged with rock ‘n roll, pop, etc.  They wear jeans but top them off with the traditional Indian kurta or kurti.  They dance the bhangra to bhangra beats, rather than twisting and shouting to rock ‘n roll.  McDonalds, Wendys, KFCs may have come to India, but their beef burgers and fried chicken have been modified to suit the Indian taste buds i.e. paneer / aloo tiki burgers and spicy fried chicken.  And, word has it; sub-continental locals seem to be giving Coke and Pepsi a headache, as they bypass the American staples in favour of their own home-grown Thums Up, Maazas, etc.

In the India of today, Macaulay’s children have died a natural death, even as British nursery rhymes are replaced with the ancient lullabies or ‘loris’ Indian mothers sang to entertain or put their children to sleep.  No longer in awe of the west, today’s Indians are taking on the west and beating it at their own game!  The time was never better to be an Indian or rather a ‘Bharti’!  Bharat rocks, and how!  And, no matter how much the board of Arcelor tries to stop Laxmi Mittal from taking over the European company, Mittal will have the last word.  Already, Mittal has Arcelor in his pocket!  Rock on, India, East is best!
